An estimate, not a promise
Carrier pigeons are homing pigeons: they are trained to return to one loft. This calculator answers the hypothetical travel-time question by combining the shortest surface distance between two cities with clear, adjustable assumptions.
The default experienced-racer model uses 80 km/h in calm air. The 110 mph profile is an entertainment scenario inspired by recent virtual-pigeon apps, not a sustainable real-world speed claim.

How fast can a carrier pigeon fly?
This calculator offers 60, 80, 100 and 177 km/h profiles. They are scenario inputs, not guarantees; actual speed depends on the bird, distance and conditions.
Can a pigeon deliver a message to any city?
No. A homing pigeon normally returns to the loft where it has been trained. The bird must first be transported away from that home loft.
Do pigeons fly at night?
Homing pigeons generally navigate and fly in daylight. That is why the calculator can add overnight rest to long routes.
Why is the modeled route longer?
The direct number is a great-circle calculation. The model adds 12% to allow for a flight path that is not perfectly straight.
Is this scientifically precise?
No. It is an educational and entertainment estimate. The assumptions are visible and adjustable, but no calculator can predict an individual bird.
